There is no official procedure for destaining slides stained with Giemsa or similar stains. However, a common procedure for destaining slides stained with histological dyes is to soak the slides in 70% alcohol with up to 1% HCL or acetic acid. Other suggestions include soaking in xylene or using methanol or a combination of methanol and acid. Once destained, the staining observed may not be optimal, and for best results, freshly prepared slides typically show the best color contrast.
