General description

Nutrient broth is a general-purpose, dehydrated culture medium used for thecultivation of a wide variety of non-fastidious microorganisms. The formulationtypically contains peptone(s) and beef extract (or similar complex nutrients)dissolved in purified water to provide amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates,vitamins, and minerals suitable for the robust growth of many bacterialspecies. It can be used as a basal medium or as a base to which selective,differential, or enrichment supplements are added.

Application

Nutrient broth is intended as a general-purpose culture medium for thecultivation of non-fastidious organisms and as a medium base for use inselective, differential, or enriched media when supplemented appropriately. Itis recommended for the examination of water, where it supports heterotrophicbacterial growth for qualitative and quantitative assessments, and can beincorporated into broader environmental or industrial microbiology testingschemes. Because of its versatility, this medium is widely used in teachinglabs, routine QC, and research for growing, maintaining, and pre-enriching bacterialcultures before further testing (e.g., plating on selective media or performingbiochemical assays).

Preparation Note

Mit Fleischextrakt und Pepton.

Solve 8 g in 1 litre distilled water. Autoclave 15 minutes at 121°C.
