Beschreibung

General description

Eine zellpermeable, kurzkettige Fettsäure, die die Aktivität der Histon-Deacetylase hemmt (IC₅₀ = 400 µM für HDAC1). Induziert die Differenzierung und hemmt die Proliferation von Zelllinien, die von menschlichen bösartigen Gliomen stammen. In therapeutischen Mengen (350 µM bis 1,04 mM) verursacht es einen Inositolmangel, hemmt sowohl GSK-3α als auch -3β, aktiviert den ERK-Signalweg und hat neurotrope Wirkungen. Wird als antiepileptisches Mittel verwendet. Stimuliert Berichten zufolge auch die Aktivität des Peroxisom-Proliferator-aktivierten Rezeptors (PPAR). Zeigt eine starke teratogene Wirkung beim Menschen und in Nagetiermodellen.
