Oliwia Majchrzak: My Next Great Impossible
Oliwia Majchrzak is a PhD candidate at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She spoke to us about her revolutionary work on cancer nanomedicines.
Polymeric nanoparticles hold promise for encapsulating bioactive substances to facilitate targeted drug delivery in the body. My Next Great Impossible focuses epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, a pivotal process associated with cancer metastasis.
“I’m a visionary when I look at the bigger picture…”
Creating a nanoparticle with specific attributes for targeted delivery requires that a scientist be a visionary, an artist, a strategist and an active listener. I’m a visionary when I look at the bigger picture, an artist when I design the chemical structure of a particle, and a strategist when analyzing the effectiveness of the particle on the disease and immune system.
“…we need to stay determined and open to new ideas.”
My supervisors Prof. Gerrit Borchard and Dr. Olivier Jordan’s genuine enthusiasm for science encourages me to go to great lengths for my research. Sometimes we face ups and downs within research; this is when we need to stay determined and open to new ideas because even a seemingly small change can greatly impact the outcome.
