Application

Pyridostigmine bromide has been used as a cholinesterase inhibitor in mice,[1] in florimetric assay for acetylcholine secretion[2] and for measuring acetylcholine release from mice atrial tissue.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.
Pyridostigmine bromide inhibits acetylcholine esterase and is membrane impermeable. It is used as a preventive medicine in chemical warfare.[4] Pyridostigmine bromide is a carbamate compound comprising quaternary amine structure. It displays low absorption at the gastrointestinal tract.[5] Sustained release of pyridostigmine is recommended for improving its bioavailability in treating myasthenia gravis.[6]
