Application

Luminol sodium salt has been used:

  • as a component of MEBSS buffer in a bioluminescence assay to detect peroxidase activity in whole blood samples
  • to study protein interaction in whole-cell lysates by immunoprecipitation
  • for in vitro reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantification in CD45+ and CD45− cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

Luminol is a redox-sensitive chemiluminescent compound. It emits blue luminescence when the basic aqueous solution of luminol having oxygen atoms come in contact with oxidizing agents like potassium ferricyanide. It is highly stable and is applicable in various fields such as analytical chemistry, metallurgy, biochemistry, and forensics for detecting reactive species. Luminol has the potential to detect defects in neutrophils ex vivo during oxidative metabolism defects such as chronic granulomatous disease and myeloperoxidase deficiency.
