Biochem/physiol Actions

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a transmembrane glycoprotein and belongs to erbB family of tyrosine kinase receptors. It binds to its cognate ligands that leads to autophosphorylation of receptor tyrosine kinase and subsequent activation of signal transduction pathways that are involved in regulating cellular proliferation, differentiation and survival. EGFR is overexpressed in tumor cell lines and is associated with poor prognosis leading to decreased survival. Its activation also plays a role in resistance to chemotherapy and radiation treatment in tumor cells. EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) may act as a new treatment option for advanced lung adenocarcinoma. Its ligands function in the Drosophila CNS and maintains glial survival. Drosophila EGF receptor plays a critical role during the development of Drosophila retina.
