MMP23B (matrix metallopeptidase 23B) gene encodes a single-pass type II membrane protein that belongs to matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family and is expressed primarily in ovary, testis and prostate.[1] Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins facilitate the breakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM) components as well as processes cytokines and growth factors. Human MMP23B stimulates TNF shedding in a cell culture system. In zebrafish, Mmp23b plays a crucial role in augmenting liver development and hepatocyte proliferation via tumor necrosis factor pathway.[2]
