General description

The fronds of Laminaria and Saccharina species contain laminarin, a low molecular weight[1] storage glucan. It is localized to the vacuoles.[2] Laminarin structure contains β-(1,6)-intrachain linked (1,3)-β-d-glucan.[1]

Application

Laminarin from Laminaria digitata has been used:
  • as a stimulant to study its effect on the respiratory burst using haemocytes of P. vannamei[3]
  • as a carbon source to study its effect on enzyme production using Pichia membranifaciens culture[4]
  • as a carbon source for Polaribacter sp. culture[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Laminarin is a biologically active compound effective against inflammation. It serves as an antioxidant and anticoagulant. Laminarin also inhibits apoptosis and tumor development.[1] It acts as a predominant source of carbon among aquatic prokaryotes.[2]
Laminarin is a polysaccharide of glucose found in brown algae and utilized as a food reserve.

Other Notes

Polysaccharide; primarily poly(β-Glc-[1→3]) with some β-(1→6) interstrand linkages and branch points.

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. ラミナリンはLPSフリーでしょうか?

    1 answer
    1. This product is isolated from the algae Laminaria digitata. LPS (Lipopolypolysaccharide) is a product of bacteria. During processing, the material is not intentionally exposed to bacteria. The expectation is that this item would have a very low LPS content. However, the product is not tested for the presence of LPS and is not guaranteed to be LPS-free.

  2. Could you kindly provide the molecular weight of L9634?

    1 answer
    1. The determination of the molecular weight has not been conducted. However, based on archived data, the reported molecular weight for one of the lots is 8,600. We recommend validating this data on your end as we have not conducted specific testing for it.

  3. Laminarin is considered a neutral polysaccharide. However, at interaction studies with a quartz crystal microbalance and the bound to particles it omitted a negative charge. Is it possible that Laminarin contains negativley charged groups?

    1 answer
    1. The charge state of this product has not been investigated. There are publications available which claim that it is neutral, however the link below is reporting laminarin as negatively charged. Unfortunately, no further information is available.

    1 answer
    1. Purity is not reported as a specification for this product.

  6. What is the exact molecular weight (MW) of Product L9634, Laminarin?

    1 answer
    1. Product L9634, Laminarin, is a mixture of different carbohydrates of different MW values.  One publication has done a detailed ESI-MS analysis of laminarin from Laminaria digitata.  Read, S.M., et al., Analysis of the structural heterogeneity of laminarin by electrospray-ionisation-mass spectrometry.  Carbohydrate Res., 281(2), 187-201 (1996).

  7. How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?

    1 answer
    1. The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. At any time, our customers can request wet- or dry-ice shipment, but the special handling is at customer expense if our product history indicates that the product is stable for regular shipment.
