General description

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is a linear polyether of ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol).[1] It is soluble in water, benzene, ethanol, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. However, it is insoluble in diethyl ether and hexane.[2] This non-ionic polymer[3] can exist in the monomer and aqueous phases.[4]

Application

Poly(ethylene glycol) has been used:

  • to grow the crystals of HLA-A∗02:01-N222-230 LLLDRLNQL (pHLA) complex[5]
  • in the fabrication of ultrathin, free-standing, and porous polymer membranes for retinal tissue engineering[6]
  • to grow the crystals of the C2c2-crRNA complex[7]
  • to grow the crystals of the apo-C2c2 thermolysin-resistant core[7]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is used in several pharmaceutical applications.[2] This polymer occurs as a preservative and is used in biomedical applications like drug delivery systems, biosensing, and tissue engineering. PEG is also used in cosmetic ointments and creams. It is used as a binding and dispersing agent in chemical and other industries.[8]
