General description

Plasma is straw yellow in color and is the liquid portion of blood. The major component of plasma is water with solids accounting to 9%.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Plasma comprises many proteins that regulate various biological functions including electrolyte balance, transport and defense.[1] Infusion of plasma by therapeutic plasmapheresis is useful in treating illness. However, at the same time it triggers allergic reactions.[2]

Other Notes

This product is prepared from pooled rat blood. It contains 3.8% trisodium citrate as an anticoagulant. It is tested for clotting, which indicates that the clotting factors in the product are active. However, it is not analyzed to determine whether other enzymes present are native or denatured. The resulting plasma is 0.45 microm filtered and lyophilized from the indicated volume.

Preparation Note

Whole blood collected with anticoagulants (9:1), pooled, and centrifuged. The resulting plasma is 0.45 μm filtered and lyophilized from the indicated volumes.

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. Is this Platelet rich plasma

    1 answer
    1. The platelet count for this product is not determined. However, no enrichment treatment has been performed. A typical platelet count for rat serum would be expected. At this time no platelet-rich plasma is available.

  6. What strains of rats are used in the production of the rat plasma, Product No. P2516?  Is this produced from male or female rats?

    1 answer
    1. A mixture of strains is used to produce this rat plasma.  The plasma is made from both male and female rats.

      Helpful?

  7. How do I store the rat plasma, Product No. P2516, after reconstitution?

    1 answer
    1. After reconstitution, the plasma can be stored on ice for up to 8 hours.  Alternatively, aliquots can be made and stored at -20 degrees Celsius for up to one month.  Freezing the solution may cause the precipitation of serum proteins.
