Gene Information

human ... MAFB(9935)

General description

MAF bZIP transcription factor B (MAFB) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 20q12. The encoded protein is a member of the maf oncogene family and is ubiquitously expressed in variety of tissues. MAFB is a 311 amino acid protein characterized with a typical basic leucine zipper (bZIP) domain in its C-terminal region.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide directed towards the N terminal region of human MAFB

Biochem/physiol Actions

MAF bZIP transcription factor B (MAFB) has been implicated in the development of the hindbrain structures, thymus, interneurons, pancreatic islet cells and the hematopoietic system. In mouse, it helps in lip and palate development. MAFB regulates lineage-specific gene expression by suppressing the Ets-1-mediated transcription. The encoded protein plays an essential role in islet α-cell function. In addition, MAFB also regulates genes involved in both endocrine α- and β-cell differentiation. The protein acts as a modulator and marker of adipose tissue inflammation. Mutations in the gene is associated with the development of multicentric carpo-tarsal osteolysis (MCTO).
