Wee1, active from rat may be used to study apoptotic signaling.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Wee1 is a protein tyrosine kinase that phosphorylates Cdc2 on Tyr15 and hence inactivates the CDK1 and CDK2, which facilitates in the negative regulation of entry of cells into mitosis. Increased level of wee1 stimulates Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) Vpr induced cell cycle arrest at G2/M transition followed by apoptosis.
Protein inhibitor of Cdk2 kinase

Unit Definition

One unit of Wee 1 is defined as the amount of Wee 1 which inhibits 90% of the activity of 10 units of Cdk2

The Wee1 protein kinase negatively regulates entry into mitosis by mediating the inhibitory tyrosine phosphorylation of Cdc2-cyclin B kinase. The stability and activity of Wee1 from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is critically dependent on functional Hsp90 chaperones. Here we

Fission yeast wee1- mutants initiate mitosis at half the cell size of wild type. The wee1+ activity is required to prevent lethal premature mitosis in cells that overproduce the mitotic inducer cdc25+. This lethal phenotype was used to clone wee1+

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Vpr induces cell cycle arrest at the G(2)/M transition and subsequently apoptosis. Here we examined the potential involvement of Wee-1 in Vpr-induced G(2) arrest. Wee-1 is a cellular protein kinase that inhibits Cdc2 activity
