Application

Fetal Bovine Serum has been used in the Roswell Park memorial institute medium-1640 (RPMI-1640) medium to culture myeloma cell lines, RPMI-8226 and U-266. It has also been used as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle medium (DMEM) to culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and 293 T cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the commonly used serum to supplement cell culture media due to its high nutritional content. FBS, despite its low protein content, is effective in promoting and maintaining the growth of vertebrate mammalian and insect cells. It can be used as a supplement to culture embryonic stem (ES) cells. FBS can also be used to prepare feeder layers and conditioned media.
