Microfibril-associated protein 2 (MAGP-2), also known as microfibrillar associated protein 5 (MFAP-5), is a multifunctional secreted protein that acts as a promoter of tumor cell survival and angiogenesis. Through alphaVbeta3 integrin-mediated signaling, it is suggested that MAGP2 may provide a potential mechanistic link between MAGP2 and angiogenesis, as well as patient survival. Based on a high level of homology between MAGP (MFAP-2) and MAGP-2, both proteins are shown to bind to and activate Notch-1, as well as mediate the subsequent release of the Notch-1 extracellular domain.
