General description

Iron(III) fluoride, also known as ferric fluoride or iron trifluoride. It is a thermally stable inorganic compound widely used as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, relatively high working potential, and reversibility compared to other transition metal fluorides. Additionally, it is also used as a catalyst in certain organic reactions, such as the chemoselective addition of cyanide to aldehydes.

Application

Iron(III) fluoride can be used:
  • To produce high-capacity lithium storing cathodes via liquid phase exfoliation method.
  • As a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries.
  • As a catalyst for the conversion of carbonyl compounds into oxathioacetals and dithioacetals.
