General description

Zopiclone N-oxide is a primary, active metabolite of zopiclone in urine as well as a major pharmaceutical impurity of zopiclone known as eszopiclone impurity A. The parent drug, zopiclone, is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic sold under the trade names Imovane®and ZImovane®and is used in the treatment of insomnia.

Application

  • Enantioselective analysis of zopiclone and its metabolites: A study developed a DLLME-CE method for the enantioselective analysis of zopiclone and its active metabolite, zopiclone-N-oxide, post fungal biotransformation, demonstrating the utility of zopiclone-N-oxide as a reference standard in pharmaceutical metabolite profiling (de Albuquerque et al., 2015).

  • Pharmacokinetic studies: An analytical method using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry was employed for the enantioselective analysis of zopiclone and its metabolites in plasma, showcasing zopiclone-N-oxide′s critical role in bioanalytical studies related to insomnia and GABA receptor modulation (Tonon et al., 2011).
