General description

Phleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic and is a member of the bleomycin family.

Application

Phleomycin from Streptomyces verticillus has been used as an antibiotic in the screening of transformants of Trypanosoma brucei. It has also been used as an antibiotic in the maintenance of Escherichia coli.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phleomycin can bind and intercalate with the DNA that leads to DNA strand breaks. It acts as an inhibitor of DNA replication.
