Purospher® STAR HPLC and UHPLC Columns
Introduction
Purospher® STAR HPLC and UHPLC columns are based on 99.9999 % ultra-pure metal-free fully porous silica (Type B). They are designed for universal use and allow the separation of basic, neutral, and metal chelating compounds with simple mobile phases and excellent peak symmetry. These columns offer outstanding stability from pH 1.5 to 10.5 over a wide temperature range and suitability for up to 100% aqueous mobile phases. Plus, they demonstrate the best all-round retention characteristics, as proven by the Tanaka test. Thanks to these features, Purospher® STAR HPLC columns allow high-throughput applications and allow maximum flexibility to use the best chromatographic conditions for any separation, including reversed phase.

- Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped: Provides tailing-free separation of neutral, acidic, basic, or chelating compounds, with excellent stability up to pH 10.5, facilitating the separation of strong basic compounds with alkaline eluents. Available in various particle sizes (2µm, 3µm, 5µm) and as special UHPLC columns.
- Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped UHPLC: Ensures tailing-free separations of neutral, acidic, basic, or chelating compounds, with stability up to pH 10.5, allowing for the separation of strong basic compounds using alkaline eluents.
- Purospher® STAR RP-8 endcapped: Suitable for separating polar compounds or position isomeric compounds.
- Purospher® STAR NH2 and Si: Designed for Normal Phase Chromatography as well as suitable in HILIC Applications (Si) and the separation of carbohydrates (NH2).
Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped Columns
Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped HPLC columns have been designed specifically for versatile application, making them suitable for separating basic, neutral, and metal-chelating chemicals using basic mobile phases, without any peak tailing. They are made from high-purity silica (99.999%) and as a result provide exceptional peak symmetry and superior separation efficiency. They offer outstanding pH stability from pH 1.5 to 10.5 across a wide temperature range. They can also tolerate up to 100% aqueous mobile phases without experiencing phase collapse. As a result, they maintain stable retention and produce excellent peak shapes, even in very aqueous environments. The adaptability of Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped columns makes them ideal for high-throughput applications and provides maximum freedom in selecting chromatographic settings. Also, they give reproducible results from one run to another and from one batch to another, exhibit best all-round performance according to Tanaka, and are well-suited for LC-MS applications.
Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped UHPLC Columns
The Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped UHPLC columns maximize performance for ultrafast applications needing high resolution, sensitivity, and sample throughput. They excel in high-throughput screening, quality control, process monitoring, method development, and LC-MS applications. With balanced selectivity, they ensure tailing-free chromatograms for challenging separations. Available in sizes with 2 to 3 µm particles, these columns are ultrafast under UHPLC conditions, improving efficiency by up to 10 times and reducing solvent use by up to 90%. They provide excellent peak shapes for acidic, basic, and metal-chelating analytes, with exceptional stability across a pH range of 1.5 to 10, making them versatile for various applications. Enhanced sensitivity through an improved signal-to-noise ratio makes these columns ideal for accurate and reliable analyses.
Purospher® STAR RP-8 endcapped HPLC Columns
The Purospher® STAR RP-8 endcapped HPLC columns are less hydrophobic compared to Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped columns, facilitating faster elution of analytes on the C8 phase. They provide better selectivity for positional isomers and peak symmetry for strongly basic and polar compounds. Constructed from high-purity silica with nearly perfect surface coverage, these columns ensure maximum efficiency in terms of theoretical plates and exhibit excellent stability across a pH range of 1.5 to 10.5. With trace metal levels below 5 ppm, they deliver highly symmetrical peaks for acidic, basic, and chelating compounds, making them an ideal choice for a variety of demanding separations.
Purospher® STAR Silica and Amino Columns
Based on ultra-pure silica, Purospher® STAR HPLC columns can be used for both normal-phase separations and amino-bonded phases. The absence of metallic impurities in these columns ensures good separation efficiency and consistently symmetrical peaks. Purospher® STAR Si (Silica) offers highest separation efficiency for normal-phase chromatography, making it well-suited for low molecular weight chemicals that can dissolve in organic solvents. Purospher® STAR NH2 (Amino) is primarily designed for carbohydrate analysis utilizing acetonitrile and water as the mobile phase. However, it is also compatible with normal-phase retention mode. Both column types can also be used in HILIC mode, ensuring reliable and long-lasting performance.
Properties & Use Purospher® STAR HPLC Columns
Purospher® STAR in stainless steel LiChroCART® cartridges
The LiChroCART® columns (75, 125, 150, and 250 mm length) in the list below (2, 3, 4, and 4.6 mm I.D.) require manu-CART® cartridge column holder (1.51486), which can be used to hold one cartridge column with or without a 4-4 mm guard column. LiChroCART® columns 250-10 mm require a manu-CART® "10" II cartridge holder (1.51419).
The short LiChroCART® columns (30 and 55 mm length) can be ordered as a set including the corresponding cartridge holder and one cartridge holder, or as a pack of 3 cartridges without a cartridge holder. The separate cartridge holders are as follows: manu-CART® cartridge holder (1.50227) for 30 mm cartridges and manu-CART® cartridge holder (1.50226) for 55 mm cartridges.

Purospher® STAR in Hibar® RT columns
The Hibar® RT columns are complete with endfittings. When using a guard column with a Hibar® RT column, we recommend pre-column holder (1.51487) for direct coupling of LiChroCART® 4-4 pre-columns.
