Carla Fuenteslópez: My Next Great Impossible

Carla Fuenteslópez

Carla V. Fuenteslópez is a DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford, England. She talked to us about her transformative work in tissue engineering and her aim to create a personalized testing platform for patients with traumatic injuries.

“…so patients can get therapeutic intervention that is specific to their needs."

I’m currently working on creating a vascularized bioartificial muscle model to research traumatic injuries and test their potential therapeutics. This platform will not only help fill in the gaps of the immediate and short-term impact of traumatic injuries, but will also help identify the best treatments available to improve tissue repair and regeneration. We can even create personalized models so that we can identify which therapeutic interventions work best for a specific patient.

“…not giving up is the only way to achieve the Next Great Impossible.”

It’s beneficial to think outside the box and to approach challenges from different perspectives and disciplines, but it’s equally important to have a mindset of ‘keep moving forward’. This mindset is crucial, mainly because there will be many obstacles to overcome. Not giving up is the only way to achieve the Next Great Impossible.

“…we are all good at different things and bring equal value…”

My immediate family includes not only my parents and my sister but also my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They’ve taught me that we are all gifted in different ways and bring equal value, whether you are an engineer, a pediatrician or a comic-loving graphic designer.
