petroleum

Analysis Note

This application illustrates the analysis of a sample of reformulated gasoline on a 60 m SLB-IL111 ionic liquid column. Due to the extremely polar nature of the phase, the aliphatics elute prior to the aromatics. The high level of ethanol in reformulated gasoline can pose a problem in the detection and quantification of benzene. The SLB-IL111 provided separation between these two compounds, with a starting temperature of 50 °C providing the best resolution. The SLB-IL111 has a maximum operating temperature of 270 °C, which is extremely high for a phase of this polarity. The high maximum temperature was utilized in this analysis to elute the napthalenes in < 15 minutes.
