General description

L-homocysteine is used to diagnose homocystinuria.

Application

L-homocysteine has been used as a supplement in cell culture media.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Elevated homocysteine levels in plasma and tissue are associated with brain atrophy in Alzheimer′s disease as well as in healthy eldery subjects. Increased homocysteine is due to deficiencies in vitamin B status, specifically folate, B6 and B12 vitamins, which act as cofactors for enzymes involved in homocysteine metabolism.

An elevated level of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) has been associated with risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The level of tHcy is affected by lifestyle, in addition to genetic predisposition. The methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism (rs1801133) is

Elevated plasma total homocysteine is associated with increased risk of dementia/Alzheimer's disease, but underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. This study investigated possible links between baseline homocysteine, and post-mortem neuropathological and magnetic resonance imaging findings up to 10 years
