General description

C24 Ceramide (d18:1/24:0) is a synthetic ceramide containing sphingosine with lignoceric acid. Ceramide synthase 2 is responsible for the synthesis of C24 ceramide. C24 Ceramide-d7 (d18:1-d7/24:0) is a deuterated derivative of C24 Ceramide (d18:1/24:0).

Application

C24 Ceramide-d7 (d18:1-d7/24:0) has been used as a standard in liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for quantitative analysis of C24 ceramide in skeletal muscle.

Biochem/physiol Actions

C24 Ceramide plays a vital role in inducing cell death. Altered levels of C24 ceramide might be a potential indication in tumor monitoring. Determining the levels of the ceramides (Cer) d18:1/16:0, Cer d18:1/18:0, Cer d18:1/24:0, and Cer d18:1/24:1 and ratios in human plasma helps to predict fatal outcome of coronary artery disease. The stable isotope form of C24 Ceramide (d18:1/24:0) is convenient for a newly described validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methodology for their clinical-scaled measurement.
