General description

The fourth edition updates and expands the material of the third edition. Besides updating the physical properties and preparation techniques of previously noted solvents, this edition includes over 150 new solvents, many selected to complete groups of isomers and expand homologous series listed in the third edition. Several isomeric and homologous series are initiated here, including the xylenols, chlorinated toluenes, xylidenes, picolines, lutidines, and silanes. The increasing importance of aerosol propellants is recognized with over a dozen propellants represented among the lighter hydrocarbons, aliphatic fluorinated hydrocarbons, and mixed halogenated hydrocarbons. Numerical values are now presented in cgs and SI units. Six new tabulated properties are included: pressure coefficient dp/dt, isothermal compressibility kT, adiabatic compressibility kS, thermal conductivity ?, solubility parameter d and evaporation rates. In addition, the method of citing journal references in the bibliography has been changed to conform more nearly to the style of Chemical Abstracts.
