General description

NT-3 (neurotrophin-3) is a member of the family of trophic factors, called neurotrophins. This family also includes NGF (nerve growth factor), BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), and NT-4. NT-3 is the most abundantly expressed neurotrophin during early development.
Murine NT-3 produced from Escherichia coli contains 119 amino acid and having a molecular mass is 13.6kDa.

Application

NT-3 (neurotrophin-3) has been used for the ex vivo treatment of skin punches obtained from rat and human samples.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Study in mice show that NT-3 (neurotrophin-3), along with BDNF (brain-derived neurotrohpic factor), is essential for inner ear development. In vitro motor, enteric, primary sensory, sympathetic, locus coeruleus, cerebellar and hippocampal neurons are responsive to NT-3. Mice null for NT-3 show significant deficiency in sympathetic and sensory nerve populations. In mice, post birth up-regulation of NT-3 induces a second wave of dopaminergic amacrine cell genesis.
