General description

DNA repair protein RAD51 homolog 1 (UniProt Q06609; also known as BRCA1/BRCA2-containing complex subunit 5, Homolog of E. coli RecA, hRAD51, HsRAD51, RAD51 homolog A, RecA-like protein, Recombination protein A) is encoded by the RAD51 (also known as HRAD51, HsT16930, BRCC5, MRMV2, RAD51A, RECA) gene (Gene ID 5888) in human. RAD51 is a member of the RecA family recombinases. It interacts with BRCA1 and BRCA2 to activate homologous recombination. RAD51 exhibits DNA-dependent ATPase activity and participates in double-strand break (DSB) repair by unwinding DNA to form a helical nucleoprotein filament. It is highly expressed in the testis and thymus and lower expression levels are found in the small intestine, placenta, colon, pancreas, and ovaries.
