General description

ELFN1 is a postsynaptic protein that regulates circuit dynamics in the CNS by modulating the temporal dynamics of interneuron recruitment. ELFN1 is specifically expressed in excitatory synapses onto orens-lacunosum (OLM) interneurons and acts as a regulator of presynaptic release in directing of the pyramidal-OLM synapses. ELFN1 localizes to excitatory synapses on somatostatin containing OLM interneurons at the plasma membrane, and ELFN1 protein, expressed post-synaptically, can direct the elaboration of specific electrochemical properties of synapses between particular cell types in the hippocampus. ELFN1’s expression is found in distinct subsets of interneurons of the hippocampus and cortex, and also in discrete subsets of cells in the habenula, septum, globus pallidus, dorsal subiculum, amygdala and several other brain regions in the mouse. The protein is also expressed in diverse cell types, including local GABAergic interneurons as well as long-range projecting GABAergic and glutamatergic neurons.

Immunogen
