General description

The protein Colipase is a co-enzyme needed for maximal enzyme activity of pancreatic lipase. It is a secreted protein produced by the pancreas that is originally secreted as an inactive proform, procolipase. Procolipase gets activated by cleavage by intestinal trypsin in the lumen of the small intestine. Once activated, Colipase′s function is to help overcome the inhibitory effect of bile salts on the lipase catalyzed hydrolysis of long-chain triglycerides that needs to occur within the duodenum. Colipase happens to have key hydrophobic amino acids that allow the complex of lipase and Colipase to adsorb to the lipid micelles, and this adsorption is essential for their digestion. Interestingly too, the procolipase propeptide also gives rise to the pentapeptide intestinal hormone Enterostatin, a small pentapeptide. Enterostatin acts to reduce food intake, in particular fat intake, when given to animals via injection or in to the brain.
