Research has shown that hyperpolarizing stable isotope-labeled metabolites, such as pyruvic acid-1-13C prior to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) increases sensitivity by > 10,000x over conventional MRI. This allows researchers to detect areas of altered metabolism, which is indicative of the presence of cancer. Additionally, differences in perfusion often associated with cancer can be observed with the use of isotope-labeled metabolically inactive agents, such as urea-13C,15N2.
What will you learn?
- Importance of measuring both metabolism and perfusion for detection of cancer cells
- Benefits and challenges of using double-labeled perfusion agent (13C,15N) over single labeled (13C)
- Process for sample preparation
- Design and results of toxicology studies
- Procedure for combined metabolic and perfusion imaging in a single imaging session
