General description

Proteoglycans are made up of a core protein to which glycosaminoglycan chains are linked covalently. They are present in many organs, and tissues and found abundantly in the vertebrate cartilage matrix. Proteoglycans are located in the extracellular and pericellular matrix of many cells.

Application

Proteoglycan from bovine nasal septum contains 86% chondroitin sulfate and so has been used to study the effects of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan in vitro. It has been shown to promote survival of neural stem cells in culture.
Proteoglycan from bovine nasal septum has been used in the induction of arthritis in mice.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Proteoglycans are involved in tissue organization and promote cell growth and specialized tissue maturation. They act as biological filters and regulate collagen fibrillogenesis, skin tensile strength, and neurite growth. Proteoglycans are also involved in modulating growth-factor activities, affecting tumor cell growth and invasion, and promoting corneal transparency.

Preparation Note

Chromatographically purified using 7M urea on DEAE-cellulose by modified procedure by Antonopoulos.
