General description

2-Butanone also known as methyl ethyl ketone is a colorless fairly volatile liquid with a pleasant pungent odor. It is primarily used as a solvent, for making other chemicals, and for production of wax from petroleum. It is derived from refluxing methyl acetoacetate and dilute sulphuric acid. It finds application in manufacturing plastic, textile, paints, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Application

2-Butanone may have been used as reference standard in solid-phase microextraction gas-chromatography (SPME-GC) for quantification of volatile compounds from dry-cured hams.
