General description

Method: Colorimetric with test strips, 0 - 25 - 50 - 100 - 200 - 500 mg/L Cl2, MQuant®

The MQuant® Chlorine test strips are suitable for a rapid determination of higher concentrations of chlorinated disinfectants, which are chiefly used in the food industry. On the test strip, free chlorine oxidizes an organic compound to a violet dye. The chlorine concentration is measured semiquantitatively by visual comparison of the reaction zone of the test strip with the fields of a color scale. For a quantitative measurement or a measurement of total chlorine, please refer to our tests for chlorine from our Reflectoquant® or Spectroquant® portfolio.

Design for sustainability benefits:

We continue to demonstrate our commitment to our planet and a sustainable future by exploring ways to improve existing products in our portfolio. We have recently reviewed the current line of MQuant® test strips to identify key opportunities to minimize impact without compromising on the product performance.

This product has benefited from:

  • Test strip with reduction
  • Recycled aluminum tube
  • Digital instruction leaflet

Application

  • Analysis of free chlorine in aqueous solution at very low concentration with lateral flow tests.: This research discusses the use of lateral flow tests to measure free chlorine in water at very low concentrations, providing a sensitive method for chlorine detection in analytical chemistry (Schwenke et al., 2019).

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. Can this product be used to measure chlorine in cell culture media? If not, which other product could be used in this setting and is anything known on how the cell culture media might interfere with the measurement?

    1 answer
    1. Specific chlorine tests for samples like culture media are not provided in the portfolio. The usage instructions for several chlorine test products indicate their use with wastewater, bleaching solutions, and disinfectants samples. It is expected that an aqueous sample such as culture media may be measurable with a standard chlorine test. Determining the suitability of a specific product for the intended application and matrix is the responsibility of the end user.
