General description

Hydroquinone is a phenolic compound, which is naturally found in coffee, tea and wine. It is used in photographic, chemical and cosmetic industries. Hydroquinone is used as a skin lightening agent. It is topically applied to treat melisma, freckles and senile lentigines. Hydroquinone is linked to exogenous ochronosis, dermatitis and skin irritation. It inhibits melanogenesis.

Application

Hydroquinone has been used as reagent for the conversion of DNA by sodium bisulfite. It has also been used as a chemical in Timm′s staining.
