Application

Esmolol hydrochloride (ESM) may be used as a standard in spectrophotometric[1] and electrochemical method[2] for the determination of ESM in biological samples[2] and pharmaceutical formulations.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Esmolol hydrochloride (ESM) is a class II antiarrhythmic drug. It is used to decrease the force and rate of heart contractions during surgery.[1][2] Overdose of ESM can lead to side effects such as bradycardia, cardiac arrest, hypoventilation, mood disorder, and coma.[2]

Esmolol hydrochloride is a ultrashort-acting β₁ adrenoceptor antagonist (β₁ receptor occupancy = 84.7%).
