Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/418/501/product-dating-information-06-25-mk.pdf

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. may i ask how to prepare 5% of borate buffer? Thanks

    1 answer
    1. The most accurate way to represent the concentration of Product No. 89273 is in molarity due to the multiple borate species that may be present in the buffer. However, assuming sodium tetraborate decahydrate predominates, the mass percentage solution concentration (m/m) can be calculated using the molecular weight of sodium tetraborate decahydrate and the molar concentration/density of the solution reported in the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis.

The specifications for solution molar concentration are between 0.127 M and 0.140 M, whereas the specifications for solution density are between 1.000 g/mL and 1.020 g/mL (at 20 °C). The maximum and minimum specified percentage solutions (m/m) can be calculated from these values. The mass percentage solution is expressed as the total mass of the solute divided by the total mass of the solution, multiplied by 100.

Using the minimum specified molar concentration of 0.127 M as an example, this can be expressed as 0.127 moles per liter of solution or 0.127 moles per 1000 mL of solution. Multiplying this 0.127 moles per 1000 mL of solution by the molecular weight of the assumed sodium tetraborate decahydrate (381.37 g/mol), dividing it by the maximum specified density (1.020 g/mL), and multiplying the result by 100 yields a minimum percentage solution (m/m) of 4.75%.

Repeating the calculation using the maximum specified molar concentration of 0.140 M and the minimum specified density of 1.000 g/mL yields a maximum percentage solution (m/m) of 5.34%. An exact percentage solution (m/m) would need to be calculated from the specific values listed in the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis.
