General description

Substance P (SP) is an 11-amino acid neuropeptide belonging to the tachykinin (TAC) family of neuropeptides. It is encoded by the TAC1 gene in the central nervous system (CNS), the peripheral nervous system, and immune cells. Moreover, it serves essential functions in inflammation, angiogenesis, and wound healing. It is also found in high concentrations in the gut. When released from afferent nerves, it causes a neurogenic inflammatory response, including mast cell degranulation. It is known to induce Ca2+ mobilization and reported to activate Goα, Gq/11α, and Gsα subunits in CHO cells via activation of substance P receptors. Also reported to induce superoxide production in neutrophils.

Application

Substance P (SP) has been used to enhance the lipid accumulation in 3T3‑L1 cells as they undergo differentiation into adipocytes in the presence of elevated glucose levels.
