General description

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an amphipathic detergent commonly used for denaturing proteins. SDS has a long-chain aliphatic group, with negatively charged sulfate groups that coat the surface of proteins, causing them to lose their quaternary structure.

Application

Sodium dodecyl sulfate has been used:
  • in chromatin immunoprecipitation
  • in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)
  • as a component of radioimmunoprecipitation assay buffer for immunoblotting
Anionic detergent

Analysis Note

Tested for use in denatured polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
