General description

Apolipoprotein L1/Apolipoprotein L-1 (ApoL-1), or alternatively Apolipoprotein L (Apo-L/ApoL) is the protein encoded by the APOL1 gene in humans. Apolipoprotein L1 is one of the major carriers of cholesterol in the blood. It plays a role in the transport of cholesterol from the peripheral cells to the liver. It is a secreted protein expressed in liver, pancreas, lung, prostate, placenta and spleen. Apolipoprotein L1 is part of the HDL (high density lipoprotein) complex and Apolipoprotein L1 possesses both extra- and intra-cellular functions crucial in host defense and cellular homeostatic mechanisms. Alterations in Apolipoprotein L1 function due to genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors have been associated with African sleeping sickness, atherosclerosis, lipid disorders, obesity, schizophrenia, cancer, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet much of its biological function remains unknown. Interesting, Apolipoprotein L1 has the ability to kill circulating trypanosomes in the blood. Trypanosomes cause a serious disease called sleeping sickness but in those individuals that have particular splice variants of Apolipoprotein L1 are spared sleeping sickness, however the variants are associated with an increased chance of kidney disease as a tradeoff. Apolipoprotein L1 appears important in autophagy and even as a cancer preventative as well. Recent research shows that increased intracellular levels of Apolipoprotein L1 can induce autophagy and autophagy-associated cell death but that Apolipoprotein L1 may protect kidney cells against renal cell carcinoma.

Immunogen

Purified recombinant fragment of human APOL1 expressed in E. Coli.

Application

Detect Apolipoprotein using this mouse monoclonal antibody, Anti-APOL1 Antibody & clone 1D4 validated for use in western blotting.
