General description

Serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine, is an important biogenic monoamine neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator, found in the central nervous system. It is involved in regulating various physiological processes such as appetite, anxiety, sleep, mood, and blood pressure. A decrease in serotonin levels might result in disorders such as obesity, schizophrenia, and depression.

Application

This analytical standard can also be used as follows:
  • Electrochemical detection of serotonin in urine samples using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) coated with multiwalled-carbon-nanotubes (MWCNT) doped with nickel, zinc, and iron oxide nanoparticles by a cyclic voltammetry procedure
  • Development and validation of an ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method to determine serotonin in raw and roasted samples of a variety of nuts, along with commercial nut products
  • Designing of RuO2 nanowires/CeO2-AuNFs nanofibers/graphene oxide/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified screen-printed carbon electrode for the multi-residue analysis of serotonin, dopamine, and ascorbic acid in cerebrospinal fluid and vitamin C tablet samples
  • Construction of a low-cost glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a nanoparticulate film of nanodiamonds and gold nanoparticles anchored to GCE using casein for the quantification of serotonin in urine samples
  • Determination of serotonin in urine samples using a two-dimensional capillary isotachophoresis-capillary zone electrophoresis procedure coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)
