What are the different lab water grades?
Water grades in the lab are defined by quality standards, such as the ASTM or ISO 3696, which help ensure that the correct water quality is used for specific applications. Standards also consider the cost of production, as Type 1 ultrapure water is more expensive to produce than Type 2 or Type 3 pure water.
Type 1 ultrapure water is ion-free (resistivity 18.2 MΩ·cm) with low total organic carbon (TOC) content. Ultrapure water is recommended for sensitive laboratory applications such as advanced analytical techniques (e.g. HPLC, UHPLC, LC-MS, ICP-MS, GF-AAS), molecular biology applications (e.g. PCR, sequencing), and to prepare buffers and culture media for mammalian cell culture.
Type 2 pure water is recommended for general lab use, such as to prepare buffers, reagents, and culture media, and as feed for other equipment (e.g. Type 1 systems, clinical analyzers, dishwashers, stability test chambers, etc.). Our Type 2 systems incorporate environmentally friendly Elix® electrodeionization (EDI) technology which produces constant-quality pure water while eliminating the need for hazardous chemical regeneration procedures, costly resins, changing DI cartridges, and adding softeners.
Type 3 water is the lowest water grade and is produced by reverse osmosis (RO). RO water is recommended for non-critical lab applications, such as glassware rinsing, heating baths, autoclaves, and as feed for Type 1 water systems.
Clinical Laboratory Reagent Water (CLRW) complies with quality standards described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI®) guideline, which defines water purity in clinical laboratories (resistivity > 10 MΩ·cm; TOC < 500 ppb; bacteria < 10 cfu/mL; filtration of particles > 0.22 μm).
Space-saving and Flexible Options—From Installation to Dispensing
Our benchtop systems are designed to save valuable lab space, providing versatile installation, storage, and dispensing options. Our most recent Milli-Q® IQ, IX and EQ series systems require only the slim POD dispenser on the bench or mounted on the wall. The compact purification unit and tank can be integrated under the bench, on the wall, or a combination of both to suit your requirements.
For labs needing more than one point-of-use, multiple dispensers can be connected to one Milli-Q® IQ or Milli-Q® IX system, with up to 5 m between the PODs. This way, scientists at distant benches—or even another lab—have access to purified water. In addition, a range of production flow rates and tank size options are available to ensure your lab's needs are fully met.
