Application

Menadione sodium bisulfite has been used:
  • as a free radical inducer to study its effects on oxidative stress in sunflower seedlings
  • as a positive control to produce mitochondrial O2 during the measurement of O2 in human proximal tubular cell lines
  • as a redox-cycling mitochondrial pro-oxidant to study its effects on protein kinase B (AKT) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling in cardiac cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

Menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) is a derivative of vitamin K3 and has been studied in the treatment of hemorrhagic diseases like hypoprothrombinemia and neonatal hemorrhage, caused due to vitamin K3 deficiency. It is also considered a nutritional supplement for animals. MSB shows anticancer effects. It also protects plants from biotic and abiotic stress.

Other Notes

Water soluble vitamin K3.

An assembled cDNA coding for the putative single-subunit NADH dehydrogenase (NDX) of Ciona intestinalis was introduced into Drosophila melanogaster. The encoded protein was found to localize to mitochondria and to confer rotenone-insensitive substrate oxidation in organello. Transgenic flies exhibited increased
