General description

β-Galactosyl ceramide (β-GalCer) is a simple glycosphingolipid. It is made up of lipophilic sphingosine & hydrophilic galactose attached to sphingosine via ether linkage. Β-GalCer is present in the myelin sheath of the central and peripheral nervous system. It has five analogs including 6a-6e.

Biochem/physiol Actions
