General description

Sodium azide (NaN3) is an inorganic azide and a biocide known to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth in soil and water. It is widely used as an active ingredient in automobile airbag inflators. It is also used in pest control, detonators, explosives, and as a preservative in biological solutions.

Application

Sodium azide can be used as:
  • A component of a preservative named azidiol (a mixture of chloramphenicol and NaN3), which is used in preserving raw milk in the dairy industry.
  • A biocide to prevent deterioration of cane juice in sugar industries.
