General description

Albumin is the most abundant plasma protein in humans. High levels of albumin are associated with dehydration. Albumin turnover is seen in infants with iron deficiency anemia. Serum albumin is a reliable prognostic indicator for liver disease. Oxidative damage of albumin is associated with advanced liver disease.

Application

Albumin from sheep serum has been used in the quantitative determination of different albumin species by albumin blue580 fluorescence assay. It has also been used in perfusion solutions.

Highly protective intestinal cell membrane antigens have been prepared from Haemonchus contortus, an important blood feeding nematode which parasitizes sheep and goats. One such antigen, H-gal-GP, is a glycoprotein complex containing predominantly digestive proteases. This study showed that H-gal-GP readily
