Application

Dowex 50WX8 (HCR-W) hydrogen form is used:
  • As stripper resin and can be regenerated by 0.25N sulphuric acid when exhausted.[1]
  • As a catalyst.[2]
  • In deionizing supernatant fraction samples for paper chromatography.[3]

Dowex 50WX8 hydrogen form may be used in separation medium for TLC, paper chromatography and LPLC.

  1. Is this type of resin suitable for separating ammonia gas from air?

    1. This product would not be recommended for separation of ammonia gas from air. Typically, a scrubbing system with a chemical such as dilute sulfuric acid would be used. If an adsorbent is preferred, activated charcoal would be the best recommendation and impregnated activated charcoal is ideal.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.   5. What is the suggested operating temperature for Dowex® 50W X8 resin, Product 44504?

    1. At elevated temperature, operation can cause degradation of functional sites and loss of the ion exchange capacity. The resin degradation  depends on many variables, such as  the level of dissolved oxygen and the presence of catalytic metals on the resin. In general, ~120oC (250oF) is suggested as the maximum operating temperature.

  6. What are the proper storage conditions for Dowex® 50W X8 resin, Product 44504?

    1. The resins should be stored in a dry cool place. The storage temperature should be kept below 50oC (120oF).Storage temperature below 0oC can cause resin freezing and temperatures below -18oC (0oF) should be avoided. Repeated freeze-thaw can cause damage on the beads. The frozen resin beads should be completely thawed out at room temperature condition before loading and use.

    1. The fine mesh resin is based on a microporous copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene (DVB) (styrene-DVB gel).

  8. What information do you have on the stability of Dowex® 50W X8 resin, Product 44504?

    1. The ion exchange resin is tolerant of a wide range of chemical conditions, including most inorganic and organic solutions with exception of strong oxidizing agents. Solutions, such as nitric or chromic acid, bleach or chlorine-generating solutions as well as peroxide should be avoided as these will result in rapid oxidation. Exposure of resins to metal ions, such as iron, manganese and copper should be minimized in oxidizing environments as they can catalyze the oxidation.

    1. To convert a cation exhcange resin from the hydrogen form to the sodium form, use two to four bed volumes of 0.5-2.0% NaCl or NaOH.

  10. What is a p.a. grade?

    1. Pro analysi (per analysis, or p.a.) grade chemicals are tested to similar - although not identical - standards as are ACS reagents. P.a. grade material are suitable for many routine laboratory applications.
