General description

N749 Black Dye (N749) has ruthenium at the center that forms a co-ordinate bond with the monoprotonated tricarboxyterpyridine and three thiocyanates. It can be used as a sensitizer that functionalizes the semi-conducting materials that exhibit an absorption peak in the near infrared region.

Application

N749 Black Dye is designed for the widest range spectral sensitisation of wide band-gap oxide semiconductors; like titanium dioxide up to wavelengths beyond 800nm.
Recommended application in 0.2-0.3mM solution with ethanol or acetonitrile/tert-butanol (1:1; vol:vol).
Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) can be surface modified by using N749 to enhance the photocatalytic characteristics of hydrogen evolution system. It may also be used as a high efficiency dye for niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) photoanodes which can be used for the fabrication of titanium oxide (TiO2) coated dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are 3rd generation solar cells combining the promise of high efficiency with low production costs.

While dye sensitization as the basis for color photography has been accepted for a very long time,1 attempts to use this principle for the conversion of solar light to electricity generally had resulted only in very low photocurrents, below 100 nA/cm
