Organelle transport is facilitated by molecular motors, such as kinesin and dynein, which interact with microtubules to transport cargo in an ATP-dependent manner. The shuttling of organelles is also dependent on kinectin, a transmembrane ER protein that associates with kinesin and stimulates its ATPase activity. Kinesin-kinectin dynamics have also been linked to focal adhesion growth. In addition, kinectin has been shown to activate the RhoG GTPase pathway which involves Rac1 and Cdc42 signaling. Kinectin is expressed in testis, ovary, spleen, thymus, prostate, colon, and small intestine.
