General description

Molybdenum(VI) oxide (MoO3) is an acidic metal(VI) oxide. It is widely employed in selective oxidation reactions. Its temperature-programmed reduction has been reported. Kinetics and mechanism of its reduction in the presence of hydrogen, propene, butene-1 and CO has been investigated. It is reduced to metal upon reaction with hydrogen at high temperatures.

Application

Molybdenum(VI) oxide (MoO3) has been used as a starting material for the deposition of Mo (Molybdenum) over the MgO-330 and MgO-500 supports by employing methanol as solvent.
Precursor to LAMOX fast ion conductors and superconductors.
Used in the solid state synthesis of a remarkable ternary, reduced molybdenum oxide, Pr4Mo9O18, whose structure contains previously unknown Mo7, Mo13 and Mo19 clusters. The new cluster product is a small band gap semiconductor.
