Priyavrat Vashisth is a PhD student at the University of Mississippi, USA, and is a recipient of the Bader Award for Chemistry Innovation 2024. He gave us an insight into his work in revolutionizing the treatment for millions suffering from chronic conditions, such as endometriosis and cancer.

Breast cancer and endometriosis are two of the most common chronic diseases affecting millions around the world. Most current treatment methods involve the use of drugs and other compounds that provide short-term solutions and cause severe side effects, thus decreasing the quality of life of patients. My Next Great Impossible is to advance the translation of nanomaterial-based therapeutics from the laboratory to clinical settings.

Gold nanoparticles offer tremendous potential due to their unique physical properties. My research focuses on developing advanced gold nanomaterial-based therapeutic systems by integrating them with a novel class of organic compounds called ionic liquids. By coupling the photophysical properties of gold nanomaterials with the impressive biological properties of ionic liquids, we can provide targeted treatment with photothermal ablation to a specific site in the body, such as diseased endometrial tissue.

I’m very fortunate that I have an excellent Ph.D. supervisor, Dr. Eden Tanner, who always values my scientific thoughts and opinions. I strive to enjoy the process and maintain a positive mindset throughout and believe that anything is achievable if you’re consistent and honest with your efforts.
