General description

Complement component C3 is an integral part of the classical, lectin, and alternative complement pathways, and its cleavage products are involved in immune responses such as opsonization and cell lysis. C3d is a fragment of C3 that normally binds to pathogen surfaces to promote B-cell activation. However, deposition of C3d has also been observed in peritubular capillaries of transplanted kidneys undergoing acute allograft rejection.[1]
